About the Area
Visit Fort Mackinac on Mackinac Island where cannon blasts, rifles fire, soldiers march and history comes alive. This destination boasts historical structures, including the oldest building in Michigan, and exhibits centered on military training, medical treatment and family life. Fort Mackinac was more than a military outpost as it was a home for soldiers and their families. Tourists have visited this great fortress on the bluff for years.
The Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse, a guiding beacon since 1889, helped passing ships navigate through the treacherous waters of the Straits of Mackinac. There’s just as much to see from the top of the tower as inside the original buildings, including the original lens and an audiovisual program named "Shipwrecks of the Straits."
The Richard and Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum is one of the most diverse art museums in the region and features Mackinac-related art and photography. The museum’s collection offers no shortage of beauty and history, such as hand-beaded Native American garments, 17th and 18th-century maps of the Great Lakes, one-of-a-kind pieces from the height of Mackinac Island’s Victorian era and original photographs from the mid-19th to the mid-20th.
