Sleepy Hollow State Park

Due to a planned enhancement project to replace the toilet and shower building, pave campground roads and update the beach building, the modern campground and shelters are closed April 15 - Oct. 31, 2025. A proposed $4.35 million in federal relief funding from Gov. Whitmer's Building Michigan Together Plan made these and other renovations possible.

Nestled just 20 minutes north of Lansing, Sleepy Hollow State Park beckons outdoor enthusiasts with 2,600 sprawling acres of scenic beauty. Centered around the picturesque, 410-acre Lake Ovid, this park is popular with paddlers, equestrians, campers, boaters and others.

The park is home to a modern campground, two cabins, a swim beach, a boating access site, a kayak launch, four fishing piers, miles of trails and more.

Saddle up and explore the park on horseback! The park boasts 12 miles of equestrian trails, a convenient staging area and two equestrian-friendly cabins for a comfortable overnight stay.

Boat Rental: Canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are available for rent at the campground office Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information, call 517-651-6217.

Disc Golf

Disc Golf: An 18-hole course is in the day-use area on Lake Ovid. Discs are available for purchase at the campground office in the summer months. The course is open year-round.

Equestrian

Equestrian: There are two equestrian-friendly cabins, 12-plus miles of equestrian trails and a staging area located just past the campground entrance. Thanks to the Sleepy Hollow Trail Riders Association for maintaining the trails.

Fishing: Lake Ovid boasts a diverse fishery with muskie, largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish and more. There are four fishing piers on Lake Ovid.

Hunting: Hunting is allowed in the state park; however, you should call this park directly to inquire about any special rules, concerns or considerations.

Metal Detecting

Metal Detecting: Metal detecting is recognized as a legitimate recreation activity when it is conducted in ways that do not damage natural and cultural resources in Michigan state parks nor violate applicable state statutes. This park map clearly shows where this activity is allowed to take place. Any items found must be reviewed by park staff and may be retained for further investigation. Areas located within the campground are limited to registered campers only.

Paddlesports

Paddlesports: Lake Ovid is popular with paddlers. There is a kayak launch located near the boating access site.

Pet-Friendly Area

Pet-Friendly Area:

Pets are allowed along the entire length of the Lake Ovid with the exception of the designated swim beach. There’s a special pet-friendly beach just north of the designated swim beach.

Pets must always be on a 6-foot leash and under an owner’s immediate control. All pet waste must be properly disposed of in trash receptacles.

The modern and rustic cabins are pet-friendly. There is an additional fee of $10 per night/pet/cabin. Up to two pets (cats and dogs only) are allowed.

Snowmobiling

Snowmobiling: The park is open to snowmobiling on open land (backcountry snowmobiling). Snowmobiles are prohibited on park trails and in campground areas.

Swimming:

A designated swim area is in the park’s day-use area. There is a beach wheelchair available to use.

Beach House: The day-use area on Lake Ovid has a beach house with restrooms and vending machines.

Boat Launch

Boat Launch: The park offers easy access to the water, with an accessible boat launch and a kayak launch. Lake Ovid is a no-wake lake. Two fishing piers are also nearby.

Fishing Pier: There are four fishing piers located on Lake Ovid, including two near the boating access site, one at the designated swim beach and another near the campground.

Picnic Area

Picnic Area: The picnic area is in the day-use area and includes picnic tables and charcoal grills that are available first come, first served.

Picnic Shelter

Picnic Shelter: There are three picnic shelters (two adjacent to the designated swim beach and one in the east picnic area) that include picnic tables, charcoal grills and electrical service (only the ones near the beach). There are modern restrooms near the ones at the beach and a vault toilet near the east shelter. Shelter reservations can be made in advance at MiDNRReservations.com.

Playground

Playground: A playground – featuring slides, swings, Gaga ball pit and basketball courts – is adjacent to the campground. It’s open to all visitors via the beach parking lot. Additionally, there are swings located near the designated swim beach.
