More Information
Petoskey State Park, situated on Little Traverse Bay, is home to a mile of beautiful beach along Lake Michigan, two modern campgrounds and trails. Located just 3 miles northeast of Petoskey and 6 miles south of Harbor Springs, the park is a popular destination for those wanting to find Petoskey stones.
The Old Baldy Trail is a half-mile loop to the top of Old Baldy Dune, popular for its scenic views. A slightly longer hike, the Portage Trail, is a 1-mile, out-and-back trail through a wooded dune area.
For those wanting to venture out of the park, Little Traverse Wheelway, a 26-mile paved trail that passes by the state park entrance, links Charlevoix and Harbor Springs. North Western State Trail is located just south of the park and connects Petoskey and Mackinac City.
Please note that pets are not allowed along the lakeshore because of piping plover habitat. Pets are welcome in other areas of the park, but must always be on a six-foot leash and under an owner’s immediate control. All pet waste must be properly disposed of in trash receptacles.
The park is located within the ancestral homelands of the Waganakising Odawa, today known as the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians. The Odawa have called the dunes and shores within the park home for thousands of years before the arrival of European and Americans. The original name for the park area is Kegomic. The LTBB Odawa fought to remain in Waganakising, in part through several treaties with the United States. The 1855 Treaty of Detroit solidified their place in Northern Michigan, which includes Kegomic. Today, LTBB Odawa is a federally recognized Indian tribe living and working in Wagnakising.
