Ionia Equestrian-Rustic
Ionia State Recreation Area
More Information
Enjoy the DNR's largest equestrian campground, boasting 46 spacious, grassy and shaded campsites. Each site features a picnic table and a fire ring. Sites #139 and #141-147 include two 12-by-12 corrals, and sites #114 and #116 include two picket posts each. The remaining 37 sites include one picket post each. Additionally, the campground offers two fresh water hydrants, two manure pits and a nice 20-by-30 pavilion located at the host site (#138) for group meals, meetings or gatherings.
The 15-mile Ionia Equestrian Trails are laid out in an irregular oval, with multiple trails connecting the north side to the south side, allowing for many options to configure rides.
As if all these great amenities aren’t enough, the friends group created an equine confidence course, which wraps around part of the campground and features 10 challenges. Each challenge offers a bypass. An arena has also been installed next to the day-use staging area to help warm up horses prior to riding. The friends next project includes expanding the confidence course and connecting it to the arena.
The equestrian campground and trails are maintained with the help of the Ionia Horse Trails Association. Visit the Ionia Horse Trails Facebook page.
