The Sandy Hook Nature Trail is a 1.5-mile interpretive trail loop open to hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The trail begins in the day-use area and wanders along the beachy dunes and picturesque Tawas Bay and the Lake Huron coast to the end of the sandy point near the U.S. Coast Guard's Fog Horn. It typically takes about 90 minutes to explore the natural features found along the mainly sandy route with some boardwalk sections. The trail passes by Tawas Point Lighthouse and is especially popular for birders, as the park is the site of the Tawas Point Birding Festival and is a major stopover site for birds migrating across Saginaw Bay. Bicycles and pets are prohibited.
