Proud Lake-Equestrian/Biking Trails
Proud Lake Recreation Area
More Information
The park’s trails open to horseback riding and mountain biking are in the process of being separated. This project is ongoing and will be completed over time. At this time, there is one loop open to mountain biking.
The trails consist of four loops with a variety of connector trails, so you can easily shorten or lengthen your ride.
The equestrian trail staging area is located on Garden Road (take Wixom Trail to Burns Road, then turn left on Garden Road). It's large enough to accommodate many large trailers, and amenities include a pavilion, two vault toilets, a fire pit and a hand pump for water. An obstacle course, built as an Eagle Scout project, is located in the meadow next to the staging area.
The mountain biking trailhead is located at the intersection at Dawson and Childs Lake roads.
- Loop 1 (red trail) heads east from the staging area. The trail passes a bridge, rolling terrain, pine forests and mixed hardwoods. There is a a power line right-of-way that allows visitors to extend their ride.
- Loop 2 (orange trail) starts from the southwest corner of the meadow at the staging area. The trail passes through mixed hardwoods and open meadows with tall bluestem prairie grass.
- Loop 3 (yellow trail) begins just west of the train tracks and features some challenging hills and unique glacial formations known as kettle moraine. The route travels through old-growth forests with spectatular open vistas. Plan to enjoy the view at the top of one of the hills, where you will find a picnic table and hitching rail.
- Loop 4 (green trail) is the farthest west trail. It starts on the east side of Childs Lake Road and provides more than 3 miles of riding. This trail connects to Kensington Metropark, where there are an additional 19 miles of equestrian trails. This trail is no longer open to mountain biking.
The trails are maintained with the help of Proud Lake Trail Riders Association and Motor City Mountain Biking Association.
