The North Central State Trail extends 75 miles and connects Gaylord to Mackinaw City. The trail is primarily made up of crushed limestone and asphalt and allows for hiking, biking and horseback riding; however, visitors should be aware that snowmobiles are permitted during the winter months. The flat terrain makes it perfect for long bike rides.

The trail is separated into the following sections:

• Gaylord to Vanderbilt (7.6 miles): Trailhead located at Gaylord Youth Soccer Complex
• Vanderbilt to Wolverine (10.9 miles): Trailhead located along E Main Street
• Wolverine to Indian River (9.6 miles): The Village has two parks between the trail and the Sturgeon River with trailheads
• Indian River to Topinabee (5.6 miles): Trailhead located at Indian Totem adjacent to Chamber of Commerce
• Topinabee to Cheboygan (11.9 miles): Trailhead located at Topinabee Park on the east side of US-27
• Cheboygan to Mackinaw City (16.3 miles): The Cheboygan Trailhead is located between Lincoln Avenue and Taylor Street just east of Western Avenue.
• Mackinaw City Trailhead: Mackinaw Crossings Drive just east of Nicolet Street
