This 420-mile long linear trail system is open to hiking and horseback riding. It stretches east to west from Empire to Oscoda with two additional northern and southern spur trails. There are multiple campgrounds and group trail camps along the trail system which are managed by either the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) or Huron-Manistee National Forests United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service (USDAFS).

Equestrian groups planning a ride may need to acquire a use permit. If a group will utilize multiple DNR campgrounds, please contact the Cadillac Operations Service Center at 231-775-9727, ext. 6006. If the group will be utilize only one of the campgrounds, please contact the unit manager for that location.
This trail is maintained with the help from the members of the Michigan Trail Riders Association.
