Fort Custer- Equestrian Trail
Fort Custer Recreation Area
More Information
The Fort Custer Recreation Area Equestrian Trail encompasses a series of interconnected loops totaling about 14 miles (or 20 miles if you add in 4 miles of equestrian trail along the Blue Trail). The trails cover varied terrain consisting of mostly single tracks with some double tracks (mainly packed dirt and sandy soil). The trail goes along the Kalamazoo River and is primarily set along a beautiful, forested route that passes meadows, prairies and seven water crossings.
The gravel trailhead and staging parking lot is more than 2 acres and can accommodate dozens of rigs. Trails leave from each corner of the parking lot and cover the entire equestrian route.
A covered pavilion with a charcoal grill provides a place in the shade. There is pit toilet, hand water pump, manure bunker and mounting blocks for everyone's convenience.
The Blue Trail provides an additional 4 miles of equestrian trail, but the route is shared with mountain bikers and other nonmotorized users.
The Equestrian Trail is shown in brown on the Fort Custer trail map and guide.
The trails and campground are maintained with the help of the Fort Custer Horse Friends Association. Follow them on Facebook.
