Wilderness-O’Neal Lake Trail
Wilderness State Park
More Information
O’Neal Lake Trail is the southernmost portion of the park’s developed trail system. This trail starts at the junction of Nebo, South Boundary and East Boundary trails. From that point, the trail runs south and west to the O’Neal Lake dam.
This section of the trail is a narrow, winding path through forest-covered rolling hills. From the O’Neal Lake dam, the trail runs west and north until it intersects with Sturgeon Bay Trail. This section of the trail is wider with fewer elevation changes and therefore open to both foot traffic and bicycles. O’Neal Lake Trail is the most remote trail in the park, so any excursion that includes this trail will take a full day. This very beautiful trail passes through a variety of topography and ecosystems. With its elevation changes and remoteness, it’s an intermediate to high-intensity trail.
The park does have a backcountry campsite on O’Neal Lake that is accessed from the O’Neal Lake Trail, so if an overnight adventure interests you, then this would be the trail to include in your planning.
