The Michigan Army National Guard will be assisting with much-needed road repairs and cabin renovations in Craig Lake State Park May 29-June 17. During construction, the park will remain open for those with existing lodging reservations, but no new reservations will be accepted during this time. There will be limited access to backcountry sites, lodging, hiking trails, etc.

There are 22 designated backcountry campsites in Craig Lake State Park. The shortest hike to a reservation-only campsite is .2 miles, and the longest hike is 6-7 miles.

Campsites are numbered and have a metal fire ring. The maximum number of campers per site is six. Bear bags must be suspended at least 12 feet above the ground and far enough from the tree to prevent an animal from reaching or jumping on it.

You must check-in for your campsite and obtain your camper pass at Van Riper State Park. Please check-in at the campground office, not at park headquarters.

The park's snow season typically takes place between Nov. 1-May 15. The roads are not maintained during this time and all roads into the park are impassable to vehicles.

About the Area

The coordinates are 46N 32’ 23.74”, 88W 8’ 7.52”. The park is located one mile west of Michigamme. Follow signs on Craig Lake Road for eight miles.

Amid the forested ravines of the Marquette Iron Range, the Michigan Iron Industry Museum overlooks the Carp River and the site of the first iron forge in the Lake Superior region.
